How to compare marketplaces
- Type the price you want to ask, what the item cost you and the shipping, in dollars.
- Add the weight in pounds and ounces if you ship it yourself, and an ad rate if you promote your listings.
- Read the table: each marketplace shows its fees, your payout and your profit, ranked from the most to the least profitable.
- Open any row for the full breakdown, or go to that marketplace's own calculator for categories, Store plans and target price mode.
- Copy the link to keep the comparison or send it to a business partner.
Each marketplace has its own badge with the date its rates were last checked and the official page they come from. The numbers are calculated on your device; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Why the same item pays differently
Resale marketplaces charge in very different ways, so the cheapest one depends on the price of the item and who pays for shipping.
- eBay charges a percentage of the whole order, shipping and sales tax included, plus a fixed fee per order.
- Etsy adds a listing fee, a transaction fee and a payment processing fee, and some sales also carry an Offsite Ads fee.
- Mercari charges one selling fee on the item and the shipping the buyer pays.
- Poshmark charges a flat fee on low-priced sales and a percentage above that, and the buyer usually pays the shipping label.
- Depop does not charge a selling fee in the United States, but you pay payment processing and, if you boost a listing, a boost fee.
- Whatnot takes a commission on the sold price and a processing fee on the order total.
Flat fees hurt cheap items most. On a low-priced sale, a marketplace with a fixed fee can take a much bigger share than one that only charges a percentage, while on an expensive item the order often flips.
Rates with a date and a source
Marketplaces change their fees several times a year, and many calculators keep showing old numbers for years. Every rate here has an effective date, the date we last checked it and a link to the source. When a change is announced in advance, the calculator switches to the new rate on the day it starts. If a marketplace has not been checked for too long, the result shows a warning and the marketplace leaves the comparison until it is verified again.
What the comparison does not include
- Seller discounts, promotions and coupons each marketplace offers to some accounts.
- Returns, refunds and cancellations.
- The real shipping label after weight or size adjustments.
- Income tax on your profit. You can set a percentage to put aside, but it is only a reserve.
Sales tax is not a cost for you on these marketplaces: they collect and remit it as marketplace facilitators. Some of them still calculate their fee on a total that includes the tax, and the calculator accounts for that.
Questions
Which marketplace has the lowest fees?
There is no single answer: it depends on the price, the category and who pays shipping. Type your item in the comparison and the table ranks the marketplaces by what you keep.
Are the fee rates up to date?
Each marketplace shows the date its rates were last checked and the official source. If a check is overdue, the result warns you and the marketplace leaves the comparison until it is verified.
Do I have to collect sales tax when I sell on a marketplace?
In most cases no. eBay, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark, Depop and Whatnot collect and remit sales tax as marketplace facilitators in the states that require it. Your own income tax is a separate matter.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser.
