How to use it
- Choose the card type: domestic, international, or keyed in by hand.
- Say whether a currency conversion applies.
- Type the charge to see the fee and the net amount, or switch to the reverse mode and type the amount you want to receive.
How Stripe calculates its fee
Stripe's standard US pricing for card payments is a percentage of each successful charge plus a fixed fee. Some cases add an extra percentage on top:
- International cards, issued outside the United States.
- Currency conversion, when the charge and your payout are in different currencies.
- Manually entered cards, typed in instead of collected through a checkout.
The current rates are in the table above, with the date they were checked and the source. Businesses with large volume can negotiate custom pricing with Stripe, which this calculator does not know.
How much to charge to receive an exact amount
Adding the fee to your price does not quite work, because Stripe also charges its percentage on the amount you added. The formula is: amount to charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage). The reverse mode does this and rounds to the cent.
Card network rules and some state laws limit surcharges for credit card fees. If you plan to pass the fee to customers, check the rules that apply to you first.
What the calculator does not include
- Dispute fees and chargebacks.
- Refunds: Stripe does not return the processing fee on a refund.
- Products with their own pricing, such as Billing, Tax, Radar for teams, Connect or instant payouts.
- ACH, wallets and other payment methods with different pricing.
Questions
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
A percentage of each successful card charge plus a fixed fee, with extra percentages for international cards, currency conversion and manually entered cards. The current rates are in the table above.
How do I calculate what to charge to cover Stripe fees?
Add the fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by one minus the percentage. The reverse mode does it for you.
Does Stripe refund its fee when I refund a customer?
No. The original processing fee is not returned when you refund a payment.
Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
It depends on the payment type and where the buyer is. Run the same amount in both calculators to compare.
