How to use it
- Pick the category. eBay charges a different final value fee in some categories, such as trading cards, sneakers, watches and handbags.
- Say whether you have an eBay Store. A Store subscription lowers the final value fee in many categories.
- Type the sale price, the shipping the buyer pays and what the label costs you.
- Add your item cost, packaging and, if you use them, the Promoted Listings ad rate.
- Read the net payout, the profit, and the bar that splits the price into fees, shipping, cost and profit.
The calculator uses the eBay rates in the table above, with the date they were last checked and a link to eBay's own fee page. Everything runs in your browser.
How eBay calculates its fees
For most sellers in the United States, eBay charges two things when an item sells: a final value fee and a per-order fee. Listing is free up to a monthly allowance of listings, after which an insertion fee applies.
- Final value fee: a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, the shipping and handling the buyer pays and the sales tax. The percentage depends on the category, and in some categories it drops above a price threshold.
- Per-order fee: a fixed amount per order, smaller when the order total is below a threshold and larger above it.
- International fee: an extra percentage when the buyer's address is outside the United States.
- Promoted Listings: if you advertise, the ad rate you choose is charged on the sale when the ad gets the credit.
- Below Standard surcharge: accounts below eBay's performance standard pay a higher final value fee.
Because the per-order fee steps up at a price threshold, an item priced just below it can leave you more money than one a few cents above. Try both prices in the calculator before you list.
Why sales tax raises your eBay fee
eBay collects and remits sales tax for you in every state that taxes online sales, as a marketplace facilitator. You never receive that tax and do not file it. The final value fee, however, is calculated on the order total including tax, so the same item costs you slightly more in fees when it ships to a state with a higher rate. The calculator lets you add an estimated tax rate to see the effect.
Find the price for the profit you want
Switch to target price mode and type the profit or margin you want. Because the fees change at price thresholds, there is no single formula: the calculator solves the price inside each range, checks that the answer really falls in that range and gives you the lowest price that reaches your goal. It also shows the break-even price, below which you lose money.
What the calculator does not know
- Top Rated Plus discounts, promotional fee offers and coupons eBay runs for some sellers.
- Returns, refunds, cancellations and unpaid items.
- The real label cost after weight and size adjustments.
- Your income tax. You can set a percentage to put aside, but your accountant has the real number.
Treat the result as a close estimate, and check your Seller Hub after the sale for the exact amount.
Questions
How much does eBay take from a sale?
A final value fee, which is a percentage of the order total including shipping and sales tax, plus a fixed per-order fee. The percentage depends on the category and on whether you have a Store. The current rates are in the table above.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total the buyer pays, and that includes the shipping and handling you charge.
Do I pay fees on the sales tax eBay collects?
The tax goes to the state, not to you, but the final value fee is calculated on the total including it. Add an estimated tax rate in the calculator to see the difference.
Is an eBay Store worth it?
It depends on how much you sell. A Store has a monthly subscription and lowers the final value fee in many categories. Run your usual sale with and without a Store and multiply the difference by your monthly sales.
Is this the exact amount I will receive?
No calculator can promise that. Discounts, ad attribution, returns and label adjustments change the final number. Use the result to price and compare, and check Seller Hub for each order.
